Demographies
The
city of Madison, seat of Lac qui Parle county, is located in western Minnesota
in the middle of vast prairie lands abundant with wildlife and rich soil for
farming. The pride of the prairie, Madison was founded in 1885 and settled by
hardy, industrious Northern Europeans, mostly Scandinavian and German. With a
population of 1,768, Madison affords the satisfaction and security of small
town neighborly life. Yet, you will find lots to see and do in the Madison/Lac
qui Parle area.
The county of Lac qui Parle takes its name from nearby
Lac qui Parle Lake. From the French, literally translated, it means "Lake which
speaks." The 6,400 - acre lake is a popular fishing destination in western
Minnesota. Lac qui Parle State Park, southern gateway to the lake, contains 530
acres and is located on the Minnesota River just 16 miles northeast of Madison.
Access is by Lac qui Parle County Road 33 and Chippewa County Road 13. If
you're traveling the beautiful Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway, Madison is
conveniently located on Highway 40 just a few minutes west.
